This segues into a meditation on the role of gendered language in describing the careers and accomplishments of women, something which was at the heart of the conversation at Women & the Canon and continues to be a focal issue in the ongoing discussions taking place through the Gender & Authority network:

“‘To gender or not to gender’ remains a tricky question. In language as in life, what we need is a middle way. Women should not be defined entirely by their sex; but nor should we have to disclaim it entirely to be given whatever credit our contributions to the world deserve.”
